In the words of Maria Montessori: The child has one intuitive aim – self-development. He desperately wants to develop his resources, his ability to cope with a strange, complex world. He wants to do and see and learn for himself through his senses and not through the eye of an adult. The child who accomplishes this, moves into harmony with this world. He becomes a full person. He is educated.’ Montessori developed ways in which children could learn for themselves through their senses and discovered that, when using her materials, they were motivated by their own curiosity and desire for independence. The teachers, known as Directresses, function as facilitators and consultants, who stimulate the child’s own interests and curiosity within a prepared environment. Children work at their own level, building on their own achievements in a non-competitive atmosphere.
It is true, we cannot make a genius, we can only give each individual the chance to fulfill their potential abilities to become an independent, secure and balanced human being.
